Robert Butcher

Robert Butcher graduated from the University of Western Australia with degrees in arts and law and was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1979. Early in his career, he became a partner in a small firm before assuming sole principalship later that year. Initially, Robert's work focused heavily on litigation, appearing daily in court handling a broad range of cases including jury and judge-only criminal trials, appeals, family law matters, and personal injury claims. This courtroom experience laid the foundation for the firm’s growth into contractual disputes, building and construction issues, arbitrations, partnership disagreements, and wills and estates. Today, Robert leads the firm’s litigation and appeals division, regularly appearing in court and overseeing a team handling diverse court-related matters. His practice encompasses family law, commercial litigation, insurance claims, and personal injury, reflecting the broad scope of his expertise in courtroom advocacy. Robert collaborates closely with the firm’s commercial team, receiving numerous referrals in commercial dispute matters. His recent recognised work includes a Federal Court appeal involving access to documents by the Tax Office, a High Court appeal concerning trust deed construction, and tax assessment appeals before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. He has also represented clients before the State Administrative Tribunal on issues such as strata title disputes and guardianship and administration cases. Additionally, Robert has provided advice and representation to legal and medical professionals in vocational regulatory matters. Committed to community service, Robert volunteers his legal expertise to several charities and a human rights organisation. He is also active in delivering presentations and seminars on topics including human rights and family law, contributing to public understanding and professional development in these areas.
