Heather McKinnon

Heather McKinnon is a Partner with extensive experience in family law, drawing on over three decades of practice based in Coffs Harbour. Raised in Tamworth, Heather has developed a strong connection to the local community, dedicating her career to assisting individuals and families through challenging and often emotional circumstances. Her approach is straightforward and focused on practical solutions, emphasising a personalised understanding of each client’s unique situation rather than following rigid procedures. Heather holds multiple qualifications relevant to family law, including accreditation as a family law practitioner, certification as a Qualified Independent Children’s Lawyer, and recognition as an Arbitrator under the Family Law Act Regulations. Her commitment to fairness, particularly in matters involving children, underpins her professional philosophy. Beyond her legal expertise, Heather is deeply involved in community initiatives. She has contributed significantly to organisations such as the National Marine Science Centre, the Warina Women’s Refuge, and the Friends of the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery, among others. Her leadership roles extend to serving on various committees and boards, reflecting her dedication to both her profession and the broader community. Heather’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Macquarie University. She was admitted as a solicitor by the NSW Supreme Court in 1984 and to the High Court of Australia the same year. She maintains active memberships with key professional bodies including the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, the Law Society of NSW, the NSW Women’s Lawyers Association, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (USA), and the Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators. Currently, Heather serves on the Professional Standards Committee of the Anglican Diocese of Grafton NSW, presides over the Friends of the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery, and is a member of the Bishop Druitt School Council. Her previous appointments include leadership and advisory roles with Women’s Legal Services NSW, the NSW Regional Women Lawyers Association, and various regional development and support organisations.
